The Time to Install EMT Conduit calculator estimates the amount of time needed to install Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT Conduit) based on the length of the conduit (L), the Level of Difficulty (lvl) and the size (S) of the conduit.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (S)  Size of Conduit in Inches (choose: 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4",1-1/2", 2" , 2-1/2" , 3" , 3-1/2", 4" )
  • (lvl)  Level of Difficulty.
  •  (L)  Length of the Conduit Run

EMT Conduit Install Time (t): The calculator returns the install time in hours, and the weight in pounds.  However these can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

EMT stands for Electrical Metallic Tubing (aka thin-wall tubing).  EMT is often used as a lower cost solution to galvanized rigid conduit (GRC).  EMT is not threaded but can be used with threaded fittings via the use of clamps.  EMT is typically made of steel.

The relationship between length of conduit, level of difficulty, size of EMT and the time to install comes from industry standard numbers.  The following table is the basis of this calculator.

Size  Lvl1  Lvl2  Lvl3  Lvl4
1/2"    0.030 0.037 0.045 0.053
3/4"    0.040 0.050 0.060 0.075
1"      0.050 0.062 0.075 0.094
1-1/4"  0.053 0.056 0.079 0.099
1-1/2"  0.056 0.070 0.084 0.105
2"      0.064 0.080 0.096 0.120
2-1/2"  0.070 0.087 0.105 0.132
3"      0.080 0.100 0.120 0.150
3-1/2"  0.100 0.125 0.150 0.188
4"      0.120 0.150 0.180 0.225

Installation Time Estimates

Conduit Weight Estimates

  • EMT Conduit Weight: Estimate the weight of Electrical Metallic Tubing based on the size of the tubing and the length.
  • GRC Conduit Weight: Estimate the weight of Galvanized Rigid Conduit based on the size and length of the conduit.
  • PVC Schedule 40 Weight: Estimate the weight of Schedule 40 PVC based on the size, length and whether it is PVC or CPVC.
  • Metal Clad Cable Weight: Estimate the weight of metal clad cable based on the size and the length.

Wiring and Box Estimates

  • Outlets and Wiring for a RoomDomestic wiring color code diagramComputes the number of outlets (boxes) and length of wire to connect them in a room based on the room dimensions and the outlet spacing.
